There are no specific rules on what size a shade should be but here are some tips as an average guide.
Choosing the right size shade can be confusing, trust your instincts and enjoy the process!
Height ratio: shade height should be roughly 2/3 of the lamp base's height (from table to bulb holder).
Width ratio: the shade's base diameter should be wider than the lampbase's widest part (up to base 50% smaller than shade)
Bulb hiding: the shade should cover the bulb & hardware to prevent glare, with the base edge at or below eye level when seated.
General size guideline for table lamps
-
Small bases ( 8"-10") = 8" or 10" shade
-
Medium bases (12"-14") = 10" or 12" shade.
-
Large bases (16"-20" & floor lamps) = 12" or 14".
Tips for a perfect fit
Cut a paper circle to your shade's diameter and height and hold it against the base
When in doubt always size up: A larger shade always looks better than one that is too small
